Blog Tour: Hemingway Man - Jim Maher - Author Interview

Jim Maher is here today with an author interview courtesy of the Teen Book Scene blog tour for his book, Hemingway Man. Thank you for being here today, Jim!

Can you give us a description of Hemingway Man in haiku?

A father dies, young man with no guide finds his own way, Hemingway style

What one song sums up how you view your world/life?

Shine - Junkhouse - Great song about how no matter where we come from, we all have a chance to make a difference.
One Thing - Finger Eleven (I’m cheating, I know) - Really makes me think of my family.

If you could meet Ernest Hemingway, what would you say to him?

Lay off the sauce, man.

You are given the option to open only one of two doors. Behind the first door is the land of Narnia, and behind the second door is Hogwarts. Which door do you open and why?

I’d go to Hogwarts. The idea of being part of this secret society of witches and wizards just under the noses of Muggles is so much fun. No more traffic jams, no more washing dishes! Oh, of course there are a couple of drawbacks, such as evil wizards with divided souls that try take over the world every hundred years or so, but with a bit of elbow grease, they’re easily dispatched. Yup, it’d be Hogwarts for me.

If you could live in any book written, which one would it be and why?

The Princess Bride. It is a story with literally everything. Escapes, pirates, swordfights, giants...the list goes on. I love the world so much, I could definitely live there.

How did you balance writing Hemingway Man with family time?

Staying up way, way too late. My boys aren’t the biggest fans of napping, so the only time to write often happens after everyone goes to bed. Coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. (But don’t drink too much, kids, you could stunt your growth.)

Does Hemingway Man have a playlist? If so, what songs are on it?

Leonard Cohen - I Can’t Forget
Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows
U2 - One
Prodigy - Firestarter
When the Night - Bedouin Soundclash
Eric Clapton - Father’s Eyes
Sheryl Crow - If It Makes You Happy

What a great playlist! Thank you for answering my questions and being here today, Jim!

-----------------

Sixteen-year-old Will has just lost his father. With no one else to guide him towards manhood, he follows the teachings of Ernest Hemingway:

1. Plant a tree.
2. Write a book.
3. Fight a bull
4. Have a son.

Good luck with that.

***

Hemingway Man is a fast-paced 50,000 word coming-of-age novella with plenty of laughs and a gripping larger-than-life narrative. Will is an instantly likeable narrator as he embarks upon his "man quest".
