Blog Tour: The Princess of Las Pulgas - C. Lee McKenzie - Author Interview

Today, C. Lee McKenzie is here answering a few of my questions as part of the Teen Book Scene blog tour for her book, The Princess of Las Pulgas. Thank you for being here, Lee! You can follow along with the tour here, or by clicking through the banner.

What is your favourite line from The Princess of Las Pulgas?

It has to be, "I wonder if you can be arrested for driving while sobbing?" And that's not because I wrote it, but because my good friend L.K. Madigan loved that line when she read it in our crit group.

Can you give us a description of The Princess of Las Pulgas in Haiku?

Lonely, yes.
And closed in heart.
Open. See. Live.

What Shakespearian role would you love to play?

For me Lady Macbeth has always been the character I'd love to play on a stage. I'd like to say Desdemona, but, like Carlie, I'd want her role re-written. That girl needs to have a few lines to put Iago into the slammer and Othello on notice. "Think again, Dude!"

What advice would you give to someone going through a rough time?

First, I'd say not to panic. That's hard not to do, but when you're in a snit, you're not thinking clearly, so any action you take might be exactly the wrong thing. Second, I'd pull out some of my grandmother's "philosophy." She always had these sayings painted on the sides of knickknacks and she'd tell me to read them whenever I had some kind of crisis. These weren't crisp, fresh sayings, but they worked for me when I was little. Here's one for a rough time. "Into every life a little rain must fall." That knickknack was probably alongside, "Every cloud has a silver lining." Thanks, Grandma. They were simple and to the point and clearly showed I wasn't the first one in that rainstorm looking at dark clouds. Some writer was there before me.

What was the hardest thing for you about being a teen?

I had the hardest time thinking I was okay as I was. I compared myself to the glamours girls in magazines or in the movies or in my classes. There were always at least two beautiful girls with just the right hair, eyes and clothes. I'd crave to have a better figure or a prettier face or not to be so darned shy. I'm almost over all that.

Thank you so much for being here today and for answering my questions, Lee! These are amazing answers!

Very nice interview. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into your life, C. Lee. Love the saying too, especially the "For every cloud there's a silver lining."
