My rating: 4/5

Teagan is a shy, quiet girl, with only a handful of friends. When she meets Garreth, it's like she's known him for a long time, yet is just meeting him for the first time. She is instantly captivated by him. When he reveals a symbol etched on his hand to her, she realizes that her life is about to change in ways she couldn't even begin to imagine. A battle of epic proportions looms as the balance between good and evil is challenged by an insidious interloper who will stop at nothing to bring his dark plans to fruition.
Angel Star is a book that, while opening slowly, packs a punch. The first few pages show a hint of what is to come, but the read progresses slowly as we are brought into Teagan's world. Once we are brought further into the story, it opens up, and grabs hold of the reader as scenes begin to unfold. The stakes are raised even higher when the unthinkable happens. Teagan is left with a decision, one that invokes a battle of wills that will have the reader invested until the very last page.
Teagan is a character that I can really relate to. She's shy, quiet, doesn't have a lot of friends, or a boyfriend, but when she meets Garreth, everything begins to change. She fights through her fears, and rallies when needed. When something happens, she has to make a heart-wrenching decision. At this point I began to identify with her even more. She is dealt with blow after blow, and yet, with Garreth's help, she is determined to overcome. I don't fault her for her decisions pertaining to a certain scene, because I fully understand where she is coming from.
Angel Star starts off slowly, but it speeds up as Teagan and Garreth's story unfolds. By the middle of the book I was deeply invested and just had to know what was going to happen next. The read kept me immersed until the end, leaving me clamoring for more.
All in all, Angel Star is a spellbinding and absorbing read that gives us both a love story, and an escalating battle between good and evil. Murgia has a new fan here. I'll definitely be picking up the next book, Lemniscate, and any other books that she writes in the future. If you're looking for a new author to read, I recommend picking up Jennifer Murgia's Angel Star. It is a powerful and engaging read.
